Turning Tides: YNDAN and Trece Martires Women’s Council Craft Sustainable Ornaments from Kawit Oil Spill Resources

YNDAN, a Filipino female-founded slow fashion label, has teamed up with the Trece Martires Women’s Council to produce sustainable Christmas ornaments made from tahong and talaba shells. These shells are collected from fishermen in Kawit, Cavite, an area recently affected by an oil spill. This collaboration aims to provide support to both the fishermen and the women of Trece Martires by creating eco-friendly products that promote sustainability.

For years, the Trece Martires Women’s Council has worked closely with women deprived of liberty, helping them create sustainable products such as pendant lamps made from recycled plastic spoons and hand-painted bayongs (woven bags). This project not only provides these women with livelihood opportunities but also empowers them with the skills needed for self-sufficiency.

Building on this mission, YNDAN’s partnership with the council extends support to the fishermen of Kawit, Cavite. Along with the Trece Martires community, YNDAN is committed to empowering fishermen by showing them new avenues for generating income through sustainable practices. By using their resources, such as tahong and talaba shells, these fishermen can explore creative ways to diversify their livelihood, creating sustainable pieces that reflect both tradition and innovation.

Rooted in Indang, Cavite, YNDAN is a clothing label that champions slow fashion, working closely with local artisans and preserving traditional handloom weaving techniques. By collaborating with communities and promoting sustainability, YNDAN not only preserves cultural craftsmanship but also provides livelihood opportunities for marginalized groups, fostering a sense of abundance and freedom in every project they undertake.

Through this partnership with the Trece Martires Women’s Council, YNDAN is committed to empowering communities, promoting sustainability, and turning adversity into opportunities for growth and creativity. Together, they aim to inspire change, one handcrafted ornament at a time.
